Often we think of the heroes of the Bible as these great men and women who had few flaws or struggles and thus were used by God. The reality is that if you read the stories between the “highlight reel” of each of these heroes’ lives, you will find people living very real lives with struggles and shortcomings that are common to all of us. Gideon is one of these “heroes” of the Bible. His reality was far from ideal. He was the youngest son of an unimportant family in an insignificant clan of a minor tribe in Israel, yet God was not limited by his reality. God is able to take any person – regardless of their past, shortcomings, or less than ideal circumstances – and use him or her for great things in His kingdom.
